Nothing says ‘freedom’ like a big tall fence running through your town. That can’t be convenient.
Now they’re planning on removing any small trees in the zone, in case protesters try to rip them up and use them as weapons. They’re now officially insane!
What I think would be funny is if no one bothered to show up to protest. People just sort of all think, “Not worth it. Too much security.” That might even get the cops to start to question their idiot government as they sit around all day being bored.
If anything, that’s the best way to protest stupidity like this: showing the governments of Western nations to be the moron money wasters that they are.
I hope they’re planning on putting the trees back in when they’re done. Insane and stupid.
Why the heck they didn’t use Vancouver is really beyond me.
A protest consisting of a lack of protest would be awesome, but these professional protester types will never grok that kind of subtlety.
If they really needed it to be Toronto, they could have taken over the convention centre near the airport, or the CNE grounds. Not the middle of the busiest part of the city! They’ve pretty much shut down the city. I’m working from home tomorrow like most downtown workers, and we’ve stocked up on food and beer, so we don’t have to venture farther than our back yard this weekend when the G20 is actually on.
The fact that you’ve had to do these things at all says to me that it’s not right.
Maybe some of these expected protesters are ‘pro’ but the vast majority of them are just folks who are fed up. Skyrocketing debt, joblessness, economic turmoil, stupid wars, overpaid officials… one can understand why people are angry. Yet they turn the screws, and never so much as now.
Personally, I’ve lost most of my faith in government in general. When will someone step up to the plate and actually lead?
I’ve been watching it all on tv today. Most of it was peaceful and orderly, the way it should be. It’s just that one small group, calling themselves the Black Bloc, who turned it ugly, and thereby justified the security budget. What political statement is made by smashing storefront windows? Absolutely nothing. Hooligans, pure and simple.
Seeing all this happen at various parts of the city where I’ve worked, lived and generally hung out over the years is pretty surreal. Downtown TO is a pretty peaceful area generally.
They are people who are angry and are taking out their frustrations with violence. Some of these guys want to take on the cops just to prove to people, even themselves, that the state is not all powerful. Not saying it’s right, but the psychology is easy to understand. Sad thing is, it does nothing to convey any kind of real message to the G20 leaders.
Even sadder still, I doubt the leaders are listening at all. I have no idea what they are doing in there but it doesn’t seem like much. You know what they have ‘decided’ so far? 1) Iran and North Korea are bad, bad boys. 2) We should stop deficit spending. 2 billion dollars and they have arrived at the two most bloody obvious conclusions in the world. But I’ll bet the food at the ‘working dinner’ was fucking fantastic.
I really need to get a job as a consultant to governments. I’d take a big, fat paycheck to point out the obvious to a world leader. 1 million per obvious resolution, maybe? At the rate they are going at this summit I’d walk off the job with 4 mil, everyone would be happy and the taxpayers will have saved 1.996 billion dollars. Conference calls are cheap.
